Should I hire a Team or an Individual?

There is a lot of appeal in the idea of having to deal with one less wedding vendor! Often, brides think that hiring just one person who can do both hair and makeup can save them money on a travel fee, and make the morning go more smoothly. Here are a few reasons why you should hire TWO separate artists (or more!):
  1. Time Saving: Having two (or more) artists tackling both hair and makeup means your “getting ready” time is cut much shorter! They can each be glamming separate people at the same time. A popular trend right now is to do a “first look” with your partner, or to do family photos before the ceremony. Those are fabulous trends, but they both mean that the bridal party has to be ready MUCH earlier in the day. If you have just one person doing both makeup and hair, they can only work on one person at a time. That means, a much earlier start time in the morning.
  2. Specialty: Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of talented artists who can rock both hair and makeup. However, I know of more artists who specialize in either hair OR makeup, not both. Hair styling requires separate licenses and schooling, and often people commit to learning and specializing in one trait or the other.
  3. Large Bridal Parties: I would say the average bridal party size is between 5-8 people. If each service roughly takes 45 minutes (hair or makeup), that’s a total of almost six or seven hours of services. If you only have one person working both hair and makeup, that’s a huge portion of time you have to take out of your morning. If you have a separate hair artist and makeup artist working, you can cut that time in half. Not to mention, most artists have a limit on total services they can offer, or number of hours they can work; so you may end up paying for a second artist regardless.
  4. Coordination: Despite what people may think, separate hair and makeup artists are capable of creating an excellent timeline for the wedding morning. Professionals will be able to collaborate and create a workflow that fits your needs, the day-of timeline needs, and the other vendors needs (like the photography timeline!)
  5. Overall Cost: While one artist may seem like a more affordable option, the reality is that it likely won’t be. If you have more than 4 or 5 people needing hair and makeup services, they will likely need to bring an assistant or second artist all together. A second artist means a second artist fee and a travel fee. Even with businesses that offer teams of hair and makeup people, you are still paying those travel and artist fees!
So to wrap things up, I strongly recommend hiring separate artists for hair and makeup! The exception to this being, an elopement where it is just one person getting hair and makeup done. Professionals will work together to ensure your day goes smoothly, and you will likely be getting two passionate people who are exceptionally talented in their unique craft.
